Nominating Committee
Purpose (Scope of Ministry): To nominate to the church a roster of names of those persons who, in their judgment, are best fitted to fill all church offices and to serve on all church committees, including the succeeding Nominating Committee, and to place the names before the church for election. The committee shall confer with each person whose name is to be nominated for any office. This committee shall nominate the chairman of all standing committees, excluding the Board and Deacon Council, which elect their own chairman.
Basic Objectives:
- Educate the church regarding all areas of service opportunities
- Identify, contact, and secure permission to nominate those persons best equipped to work in the various areas of service
- Present nomination reports as needed at called and regular church business meetings
Ministry Team Composition Requirements:
- Church Membership: Yes (must be members for at least year)
- Chairman: Selected by Nominating Committee and elected by church body
- Length of service: 3 year term
- Main Staff Contact: Senior Pastor
General Responsibilities:
- Work with the Pastors as requested to identify specific service areas needed for each church year
- Nominations must be made in compliance with the Ministry Team Composition Requirements as defined in the church’s Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Encourage congregants to participate in service opportunities. This may be accomplished through the use of church publications, web site, brochures, pulpit announcements, information tables staffed by nominating committee members, pastoral sermons, and/or testimonies of members who have served in various capacities, etc. This is to be done in coordination with the pastors.
- Work with Senior Pastor, Pastoral Staff, and Vocational Staff to assist in identifying persons for service in their areas of ministry responsibility (i.e., deacons, adults, students, children, music, etc.)
- Maintain electronic record of Nominating Worksheet
- Work closely with Church Secretary to ensure nominating reports are correct and election dates are maintained
New Deacon / Yokefellow Selection / Election Process:
- The Nominating Committee will work with the Pastors and Deacon Council to identify prospective candidates to serve as a Deacon / Deacon Yokefellow.
- Candidates will be asked to complete the Deacon and Yokefellow questionnaire in writing and return it to the nominating Committee Chairperson.
- Once the completed questionnaire is received, the candidate’s responses will then be given to the Senior Pastor and the other members of the Nominating Committee for their review.
- Next, a personal interview with the Senior Pastor and the members of the Nominating Committee will be arranged. The candidate is encouraged to have his wife accompany him for the interview.
- Shortly after the candidate’s final interview, he will be notified of the committee's decision.
- If asked to be a Deacon or Deacon Yokefellow, his name will be presented at the next business meeting.
- For an already ordained Deacon, upon election the candidate will begin serving in the new term.
- For Yokefellow, upon election the candidate will begin serving immediately as a Deacon in Training ("Yokefellow"). Upon a successful year in this role, he will be ordained as a Deacon at SMRBC in a service led by our pastor.
Measurements of Effectiveness:
- Ministries and other areas of service have an adequate number of qualified persons to accomplish their team’s basic objectives
- Church Members and other congregants find their personal areas of service rewarding
- Nominating reports are submitted for congregational votes in a timely manner
- Committee records are consistently organized and electronically maintained through a working collaboration of the committee and the church secretary
